35# Building in Public: A Retrospective
Three years ago, I started sharing everything. The wins, the losses, the revenue numbers, the failures.
Here's what I learned.
The Unexpected Benefits
Building in public isn't primarily a marketing strategy. It's an accountability mechanism.
When you tell thousands of people what you're going to do, you're far more likely to actually do it. The social pressure becomes fuel.
The Hidden Costs
Not everything should be shared. Some struggles are better processed privately. Some wins are better celebrated quietly.
The pressure to constantly produce content can become its own distraction from the work that matters.
The Balance
Share the lessons, not just the highlights. Be honest about failures, but don't perform struggle. Build genuinely, share selectively.
